Sterling Buggers up Piracy

Jim Sterling of Destructoid decided to take the recent leak of Crysis 2 as a springboard for some ramblings against piracy and PC development. While game piracy is something worth giving an eyeballing it’s only worth doing it if you’re going to put a bit more effort in than a ill thought out, narrow minded and cardboard thin rant on the matter.

My Glimpse at the VG Blogging Engine

At the end of last week I had a source tell me a great little snippet of news: Portal 2 will feature co-op between PC and PS3 players. I posted this news to PXOD, submitted it to a few sites, and then stuck it up on N4G.

Very quickly this became a big hitter for PXOD as it soon spread to Gametrailers, NeoGAF and eventually reddit. WordPress offers up a list of all the links that folks have clicked to get to your story, so I was browsing through them, having a look at the reaction to the news, and one thing I picked up on a few times was  this “who are these people? Should we believe this?” vibe. At least when folks weren’t arguing over PC or PS3 gamers being better. Read the rest of this entry »

Short Thought on Reviews

So I’ve kinda noticed I’ve not really paid any attention to any reviews for a long time. I might go back to EG’s reviews, I stopped visiting a while ago to the whole site but I remember the reviews been okay.

But by n large I’ve not really read many reviews for the last year or so. Magazines are out the window as I’ve not bought a gaming mag for probably over 3 years now. Pretty much for any gaming reviews I’ve wanted in the past year I’ve hunted down someone I know who has the game n asked them about it. Without them been paid for it I can kinda trust them to give an honest opinion, and it’s a live ‘review’ so I can ask and get a response on certain aspects of a game. Destructoid have managed to make the whole review process a parody, Kotaku trashed their okay scoreless review system recently. Gametrailers are hit n miss, though the video review style I like (one day PXOD, one day). I don’t much care for discussing how review scores have all kinda gone a bit tits up lately (though I guess if you hit the metacritic options maybe you still agree with them)

Who do you read or take advice from? I just kinda want to know what other people are like (and post a poll)

My Thoughts on the VG Supreme Court Case

So today marks the start of  The State of California vs. The Entertainment Merchants Association and Entertainment Software Association case at Supreme Court. Essentially it looks to see if the sale of violent video games to minors should be regulated.

Kotaku PC Gaming Week

Over the past week Kotaku have hosted ‘PC Gaming Week’ where I presume they tried to shake off the image of being an overly console centric blog and try to win back their fleeing PC audience from Rockpapershotgun.

As they said in their opening article for this week;

One might think that Kotaku Tower is a place bereft of computers, or at least gaming on computers, judging by how infrequently we write about them. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

At least they’re aware of the reputation they have. Of course how far they go to show how ‘further from the truth’ this reputation is proves to be lacking.

Apple to buy Facebook? HAH!

So I’m  catching up on the Internet and apparently the rumour mill is firing on the speculation that Apple might use some of its substantial equity to pick up Facebook.

They can probably afford it without skipping a heartbeat. The high mark up of iOS devices has made them immensely rich. It’s not really their thing though.

Why The Human Race Won’t Leave the Solar System

AlphaCentauri Space. The final frontier. One the human race will most likely never voyage into.

Just been discussing the topic with Tom, my housemate, and thought I’d put my thoughts to paper on the almost insurmountable challenges we have facing us if the human race ever feels taken by a whim to expand an empire into the stars.
